In KWUN Sun Cheol’s portraits there is a tension between smooth and rough brushstrokes, between surface and depth. Some portraits almost resemble sculptures by superposing so many layers. But the energy and tension of the brushstrokes disperse to show faces which are in the end only a shine and an outward shell. The brushstrokes don’t form a firm body, they dissolve as if they were just a description of the ephemeral eye’s movement; the crisscrossing and concentration of their lines form a topographic relief. Kwun doens’t give the expression of the portrayed away, he lets them avert their gaze and look inwards. He depicts the young with their smooth skin, but much more often the old and wrinkled, marked by life and time. The individuality of his faces seems a hazard, which the painter wants to get on the track of by making physiognomical studies, but in the end depicting human condition itself. Finally his paintings are not portraits in the conventional manner.
His sources for the portraits are taken from sketches done on the streets, or come from paintings and photos in magazines. Kwun is a passionate draughtsman, and specially in this area he has a freedom of expression which lets his portrayed resemble to mere phantasies. Daphné Le Sergent sees them as reaching back into time, as a far-off memory. A typical melancholical feeling impregnates in her opinion his work, still resulting from the effects of the Korean War (1950-53).
Kwun’s colours by their superlayering and mixing form a palette of greys, but yellow, blue and red flare up, colours resembling miniature and glass painting. Kwun’s search of a spirituality in art shows most clearly in his „souls“, paintings showing mystical light apparitions, fallen souls and crucified figures. It is here that he most clearly states the focal point of his art.

Berlin Beer Week 2019 We’re celebrating our fifth anniversary, and you’re welcome to join! The first city-wide beer festival in Germany is back, and better than ever!
So pack your bags, folks, and don’t forget your swimwear, for you’re going to need it when we celebrate Berlin’s vibrant beer culture from July 19 to 28.
What can you expect during Berlin Beer Week? International top-shelf breweries hosting events in the German capital, food & beer pairings that will make your tongue tickle, classic tastings, brewing courses, freaky and inspired combinations of beer and the arts, music and dance, games and a multitude of other activities. The only limit is the imagination of our participants.
From beer ice cream to Bavarian pub crawls with an oompah band, from beer karaoke to beerlesque – we’ve seen a lot over the years, but not nearly all.
This year’s Festival beer is set to make waves like our river cruise ship during the Opening Event. To spice things up, we’re adding a political dimension to this year’s batch in order to draw some attention to restrictions that are making life difficult for creative brewers in Germany. Stay tuned!
The Opening Event is and remains our popular Berlin Brews Cruise – too popular, perhaps, as it’s almost sold out. More than 40 extremely rare beers on tap on a three-hour cruise on the Spree river.
If you aren’t among the lucky few to score a ticket, don’t be too sad! For our new Closing Event is going to be another one-of-a-kind party:
Join us at the Haubentaucher, a secluded area right in the middle of Berlin’s party area RAW, for the FESTIVAL². What’s a Festival²? It’s a festival where other festivals join the party. As it’s still Berlin Beer Week, these are mainly, but not exclusively, beer festivals from around the world. They’re taking top breweries and beers from their countries along for the ride, to give you a peek of what their festivals are about. Over two days of music, dance, pool party, tasting, talks and panels, we’ll create a new festival experience for guests and exhibitors alike. We’re looking forward to a great summer party with you and our festival friends. (list constantly updated)
