A fever dream of field recordings, jazz passages, text fragments, gospel and blues elements and electronica: Composer and musician Matana Roberts is originally based in Chicago’s jazz scene. The composer, percussionist and instrument maker Bex Burch describes her organic sound textures, which vary between meditative spirituality, improvisation and playfully energetic rhythms, as “messy minimalism”.
