SUMMARY:Karen Ami - Root Fragments
DESCRIPTION:Save the date for Karen Ami’s gripping solo exhibition “Root Fragments”! \nIn the “Root Fragments” solo exhibition\, Chicago-based American interdisciplinary artist Karen Ami presents a group of mosaic artworks\, ceramic sculptures\, and drawings created during her residency at SomoS Arts in Berlin in the winter of 2024. \nThe exhibition emerges from Ami’s deep engagement with family brokenness\, displacement\, and reunion within the historical framing of a post-Holocaust diasporic community. \nThe making of Ami’s mosaics follows a symbolic\, almost alchemical process that “pulverizes the past to create a new space for repair\, enabling acceptance and growth\,” as she describes. \nIn her evocative fusion of personal narrative with broader historical contexts\, Karen Ami scrutinizes the fissures left by history\, using art as a vehicle for overcoming these disruptions. \n“Root Fragments” beckons viewers into a realm of reflection\, where the process of reassembling fragments serves as an allegory for insight and endurance amidst adversity. \nOpening reception: Tuesday\, March 26\, 6 – 9 pm\nOn view March 27 – 30\, 2024\, 2 – 7 pm\, free entry\nLocation: SomoS – Kottbusser Damm 95\, 1.0G\, 10967 Berlin Public Transport: U8 – Schönleinstraße

The aim of the exhibition is to question and deconstruct myths surrounding male and female attributions. The project is organized and curated by IntAkt – International female visual artists ( Internationale Aktionsgemeinschaft bildender Künstlerinnen)\, Vienna – in collaboration with HilbertRaum and Retramp Gallery. The latter are two project spaces for contemporary art in Berlin Neukölln. The current exhibition is an essential extension of the previous exhibition “Motherhood I / Concepts of Motherhood”\, which was also realized by HilbertRaum member Hannah van Ginkel in close cooperation and with the support of the Motherhood team. \nIn “Motherhood II / Shifting Realities”\, the focus is on intergenerational and historical themes relating to motherhood. Furthermore\, socially highly relevant perspectives such as queer feminist and socio-political positions are shown to direct a more intersectional view of the topic. The exhibition also draws attention to social structures that make it difficult for artists – both mothers and non-mothers – to make a name for themselves on the art market.\nParallel to the exhibition\, the Motherhood Team will be showing works by international female artists in public spaces on billboards in cooperation with “Procreate Project”. Procreate Project is a growing archive of international artists who are mothers/parents. The posters will be shown as a large poster twice in the city\, the locations are Manitiusstraße and Fuldastraße (Manitiusstraße 13 and Fuldastraße 53\, 12047 Neukölln\, Berlin). On display: 22.1.2024 – 4.2.2024. https://archive.procreateproject.com/archive/ \nOn Saturday\, December 10\, 2024\, at 12:00 noon (GMT +1)\, an international online conference of IntAkt will take place with various other networks on the topic of motherhood. Participants include Dyana Gravina from “Procreate Project” (London)\, Marcia Breuer from “Mehr Mütter für die Kunst” (Hamburg)\, Ruchika Wason Singh (India) “A.M.M.A.A.” (is the first platform for mother artists in Asia Yllyang Montenegro and Len-Len from “the O Home” (Philippines)\, as well as Ines Doleschal and Rachel Kohn from “Fair Share” (Berlin). The aim is future collaboration and the visualization and promotion of the flow of information on the topic of motherhood in contemporary art. In spring\, the second IntAkt Motherhood online conference will invite curators\, collectives and platforms.\nRegistrations for the online conference should be sent to \nmotherhoodzwei@gmail.com\nText Agnes Rossa\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/347524464763959/

SUMMARY:Who Is Afraid Of Friendly Capitalism Mini - Lounge
DESCRIPTION:After more than 15 years at the same venue\, the Berlin Friendly Capitalism Lounge is once again going on the road and will be making a guest appearance for one evening at the Panke in Wedding. \nThe POP Happening\, curated by Fehmi Baumbach and Jim Avignon\, has existed for over 20 years and during this time has repeatedly and imaginatively positioned itself as an alternative to self-optimisation and careerism in the cultural sector\, often driven by a healthy distrust of the so-called natural laws of the free market economy.\nmarket economy. \nThe FC lounge responds with art and humour to the conditions in the world and in Berlin\, which\, as always\, couldn’t be worse\, and presents a good-humoured mix of artists\, DJs and bands who have come together for an exhibition happening on 21 December. \nWith the bands Neoangin\, who will present his infamous Xmas show on this evening\, with Nova Huta\, the flagship of Easter entertainment\, with the DJs Olli Goolightly (Ankerklause) and the DJ duo Soffy O. (toktok) and Jonas Poppe (Oum Shatt)\, curated especially for this evening. \nWith the artists Fehmi Baumbach\, Jim Avignon\, Hermann Heilemann and Katharina Grossmann Hensel\, who will not only be hanging their works on all the walls of the Panke\, but will also be bringing along an Infinity Market of interesting and strange devotional objects for the small purse as a last-minute Xmas option. \n21.12. ab 19 Uhr PANKE \, Gerichtstr 23\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/306277349040252/

SUMMARY:A Long Walk Home - Jorge Abella
DESCRIPTION:Opening\, 13th October\n6.30-9.30 pm\nOpen sa & sun 3-7 pm \nPhotography exhibition\nBy Jorge Albella \nA Long Walk Home.\nIt´s the long path that these kids take to return home after the day grazing cattle\, the main and only sustenance of their families. \nThis involves another more important connotation: the way of nomadic or semi-nomadic groups – such as the Maasai – where their life is a continuous journey\, through different territories\, depending on the seasons\, but without the existence of borders or political maps\, and where the only “border” used to be is the geography (in the old times). To then always return to the same place\, the circle closes. And then it starts all over again. \nThis leads me to other reflections: the idea of freedom that many people long for in modern societies\, where in spite of all the technological advances\, we often need that long journey\, moving to other places\, other cities\, other countries\, other jobs\, other friends. It often also happens that in the end we find ourselves in the same places of origin. The circle closes.\nAnd it starts all over again.\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nA Long Walk to Nowhere – Facing evictions in their own land\nWandering from north areas of Tanzania\, Loliondo\, Ngorongoro to Arusha\, you constantly meet groups of shepherds\, adults or more often kids\, roaming freely through the fields\, with their herds of oxen and goats\, always dressed in their blue or red checkered tunics and skirts (the shuka)\, a machete at their waist and a wooden stick for protection. It is the beautiful and mysterious image of walkers in the middle of the green meadows or the\nenormous plains\, where borders do not exist\, or at least they do not exist in the minds of these wandering shepherds. \n“The land has always been there\, our grandparents\, great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents have always grazed there. It is our land\, and it is the basis of our people”\, Shengena Kilel\, counsellor of Olorien village said in an interview with Forest People Programme. \nThe Maasai people\, People-of-Cattle\, (or in a strictly connotative sense “Maasai” is said to signify those who say maa-sai / I-will-not-beg\, in contrast to those who plead for their lives or for brides by saying aa-sail. A.C. Hollis\, 1905-1970)\, is composed of between 1.3 to 1.5 million people living in Kenya and Tanzania. Originally from southern Sudan\, in the last century they have been in continuous legal conflicts\, losing their ancestral lands\, and being forced to move to other\, increasingly reduced areas. \nSince 2013 the Maasai villages in the area between Loliondo and the Serengeti have suffered altercations with paramilitary groups of the authorities trying to expel them\, it is part of the conflict that has exists since the private tourist company OBC\, acquired an area of 1500km² in the Loliondo territory to install a hunting corridor for the Dubai royal family and other millionaire tourists. In 2017 the Tanzanian government stopped the project\, giving hope to the local Maasai people\, however\, at the beginning of 2022 the Tanzanian tourist department resumed the contracts for the construction of the game reserve\, and again began the expulsions of the Maasai villages. The pressure of the military has been violent\, burning villages\, and even shooting at the inhabitants who refused to move. \nThere is a long legacy of evictions and forced relocations of the Maasai\, under the presumption of ecosystem conservation – even while Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations reports cite pastoralism as enhancing biodiversity rather than harming it: \nhttps://www.fao.org/3/cb5855en/cb5855en.pdf \nThe Maasai pastoral leaders wrote a letter to the US\, UK and US governments asking for their urgent attention and help: \nhttps://www.oaklandinstitute.org/sites/oaklandinstitute.org/files/pdfpreview/ncaa-community- signatures.pdf (oaklandinstitute.org) \nOn 1st October 2022 the The regional East African Court of Justice has ruled that Tanzania’s decision to cordon off land for wildlife protection was legal\, against the wishes and the voices of the local Maasai communities\, and against the legal publications of the United Nations to stop forced evictions. Nearly 150\,000 Maasai are now facing eviction from their own ancestral territory in Northern Tanzania\, their survival is in danger\, and migration to the\ncities or to other countries as refugees could mean another humanitarian catastrophe.\nOn last 4th Sep\, this year\, the Tanzanian government has denied a delegation of The Greens/European Free Alliance MEPs from visiting the country\, despite previously agreeing to allow them in to investigate human rights abuses against the Maasai in the name of conservation. This group of MEPs has called the government’s move “an incomprehensible decision.”\nAs International Survival explain: “The Maasai have lived for generations in the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania and have shaped and protected these lands\, preserving wildlife and biodiversity in areas such as Loliondo\, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the now Serengeti National Park. However\, they have been violently evicted from their ancestral lands to make way for conservation projects\, tourism\, and trophy-hunting schemes“: \nhttps://www.survivalinternational.org/news/13729 \nThis exhibition is dedicated to all those who suffer evictions in their own homes\, and especially to the ancestral people of the grasslands\, who must not be forgotten.\nJorge Albella. Berlin. September\, 2023\nA Long Walk Home © JORGE ALBELLA\, 2023\nwww.jorge-albella.com\nE-Mail: jo_albell@hotmail.com \nBio\nJorge Albella is a self-taught photographer from Madrid. Since adolescence he has been involved with photography\, however after viewing “Invisible Man” by Jeff Wall in 2001\, he decided to immerse himself deeper into his photographic journey. In 1999 he moved to Berlin\, where he currently resides. \nHis photography explores urban landscapes and the social transformations that occur within those areas. \nAdditional works include a visual experiment conceptualising “travelling and borders” (Behind the Window\, 2003 – 2013)\, as well as aspects of nature\, paths and solitude (Camina en silencio\, no mires atrás\, 2011 – 2013). \nExhibitions\n2021 „Strange Symphony“\, Solo exhbition at PremArts Galerie\, Berlin.\n2014 „Disapearing Shanghai“\, group exhibition. SUMMARY:Maryna Semenkova - Paragraph 24 - Performance at SomoS
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 30\, at 7 pm\, SomoS Arts presents the “Paragraph 24” performance by multidisciplinary Ukrainian artist Maryna Semenkova\, elaborating on the ambivalence of living in exile. \nSomoS is honored to unveil the performance\, “Paragraph 24” by Ukrainian multimedia artist Maryna Semenkova\, presented in the SomoS exhibition space on September 30\, 7 pm. Delving deep into the tribulations of exile\, the complexities of personal and collective trauma\, and the uncertainties that lie ahead\, Semenkova crafts a performance that is emblematic of the universal immigrant experience. \nFor many refugees in Germany\, Paragraph 24 of the Residence Act serves as a beacon of solace\, marking the legal foundation of their stay in Germany. Since the early days of 2022\, it has simultaneously embodied a sense of refuge for Ukrainian immigrants while also revealing the notoriously Kafkaesque intricacies of navigating the German bureaucratic maze. \nSemenkova’s performance bears the hallmark of introspection and collective resonance connected to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that has become synonymous with her recent oeuvre. Through “Paragraph 24\,” she not only narrates her eight-month experience as a refugee in Germany but adeptly shifts from the personal to the universal. In her own words\, Semenkova reflects\, “I felt like a tree that had been uprooted. While my roots yearned for familiar nourishment\, I grappled with a foreign terrain.” This sentiment\, intensified by her own background as a lawyer\, accentuates the emotional undertones of her refugee experience. \nEnriching her already profound collection of works\, “Paragraph 24” specifically comments on the harrowing effects of war and the fervent endeavor to preserve culture and dignity. This seminal piece transcends her previous narratives centered around past traumas and instead situates itself in the immediate present\, contemplating exile as a potentially enduring reality. \nSemenkova poetically articulates her journey\, stating: “Upon setting foot in Germany\, I was beset with a profound realization — the war may not cease soon\, and my return home might remain elusive. This epiphany ushered in feelings of loss and frustration\, sentiments that accompanied me as I endeavored to find my footing amidst unfamiliar traditions\, a different mentality\, and a sea of paperwork.” \nBerlin\, with its rich history as a nexus of migration from Eastern Europe\, offers the perfect backdrop for “Paragraph 24”\, echoing experiences that resonate with many of its residents.\n………………………………………………………………………………………………\nAbout Maryna Semenkova\nOriginating from Odesa\, Ukraine\, Maryna Semenkova is an acclaimed multidisciplinary artist. Her practice\, marked by the utilization of photography and performance\, often addresses eco-feminism\, the legacy of collective memory\, and feminism’s evolving role in the post-Soviet milieu. Embracing a collage methodology\, Semenkova fragments reality\, frequently positioning herself at the heart of her art. Following her departure from Ukraine in late February 2022 due to the Russian Federation’s invasion\, she has graced multiple residencies and exhibitions\, including notable venues like Nelimarkka-Museo in Finland and Art Space K85 in Greece. Since February 2023\, she has been enriching the SomoS Artist Residency community\, taking part in its Artist at Risk support initiative.

SUMMARY:Benedict Yu - ENRAPTURED
DESCRIPTION:Opening: Tuesday\, September 12th\, 6 – 9 pm \nDuration: September 13th – 16th\, Tuesday – Saturday 2 – 7 pm \nLocation: SomoS – Kottbusser Damm 95\, 1.0G\, 10967\, Berlin \nFree entry \nCoinciding with Berlin Art Week\, multi-disciplinary artist Benedict Yu’s solo show Enraptured conflates the spiritual and the bodily\, describing one in terms of the other\, making use of virtual reality technology\, video\, digital print\, painting\, and installation. \nAbout\nRaised in Taiwan and educated in Singapore\, Benedict Yu presents his artworks for the first time in Germany in his solo exhibition Enraptured. Inspired by the artist’s varied religious and cultural backgrounds and the liberal atmosphere of Berlin\, Enraptured symbolizes a passionate artistic quest for self-discovery. His work employs religious motives from Christianity and Buddhism\, used in ambiguous ways that seek the holy in the sensual and vice versa. \nCentral to the exhibition is the innovative use of virtual reality technology\, where Yu invites viewers into an alternate cosmic realm. Within this space\, visitors are surrounded by 27 figure drawings brought to life through VR\, a testament to Yu’s dedicated work during his residency. The pieces in this series\, titled Consummation\, were painted blindly\, merely by touch\, with the last one representing a self-portrait created on the artist’s 27th birthday. \nEnraptured also includes a dance video\, an installation piece\, over-painted digital prints\, and the results of his live painting performance Peregrination. Benedict Yu’s work in the versatile yet conceptually coherent Enraptured show encapsulates the struggles and triumphs of embracing seemingly conflicting facets of the self\, inviting viewers to reflect on their own journeys of self-discovery and growth. \n………………………………………………………………………………………………\nAbout Benedict Yu \nBenedict Yu is a Taiwanese Singapore-based multi-disciplinary artist and cultural entrepreneur/manager who works in virtual reality\, painting\, and installation. Yu received his diploma in Fine Arts from LASALLE College of the Arts Singapore in 2017. In 2017\, Benedict received a research award from the same institution\, which allowed him to conduct research in Lhasa\, Tibet. Yu’s projects have been presented in London\, Kyoto\, Tokyo\, Barcelona\, Rovereto\, Singapore\, and Taiwan.

SUMMARY:Estrangement - a vague sense of belonging By Very Kori
DESCRIPTION:Estrangement – a vague sense of belonging\nBy Very Kori \nRetramp Gallery\, Reuterstrasse 62\, 12047 Berlin\n8th-10th of September 2023\nVernissage: 8th of September 2023 starting at 6PM\nGeneral opening hours gallery: daily 3PM-7PM \nRetramp Gallery proudly presents “Estrangement – a vague sense of belonging”\, the third solo exhibition by Dutch-born artist Very Kori. Known for her embrace of the unconventional\, Kori’s works delve into the realms of spirituality\, mental health\, and the art of caring. \nIn an era where the term “ghosting” has become a familiar part of our vernacular\, “Estrangement – a vague sense of belonging” by Very Kori takes on added significance. It serves as a poignant exploration of the idea of making visible what has suddenly disappeared. \nJust as ghosting refers to the sudden and unexplained disappearance of a person from one’s life\, Kori’s art sheds light on the nuances of estrangement in broader contexts. Kori’s art offers a sanctuary for introspection\, prompting us to reflect on our own sense of disconnection from the world. In strong contrast with the topics of her art\, the artworks display movement\, bright colors with strong light and dark contrast\, spirals\, cut off edges – thereby bridging the gap between the tangible and intangible. Her works foster a renewed sense of connection and unity: a vague sense of belonging. \nThe main proposition of this upcoming exhibition is a 180 cm by 220 cm piece\, the artist’s largest work to date\, which she declines into an immersive performance in which the viewer is encouraged to take part. \nThe piece\, titled “Torn Apart”\, is mirrored as a fragmented print on canvas on the opposing wall. The viewer is invited to take a part of painting – as a reflection that in estrangement\, we share a collective experience of loneliness\, but also that as we estrange those around us\, we only accept one piece of them and reject the rest. This performance explores simultaneously both sides of estrangement – on both sides of the second room of the exhibition. The art piece is no longer merely the piece of art. It is the performance piece of the art itself. \nJoin Very Kori on a transformative journey through “Estrangement – a vague sense of belonging”\, where art becomes a conduit for healing and reconciliation. Experience firsthand the power of her direct and evocative expressions as she invites us to confront our own estrangement and rediscover the beauty that lies within it. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1817524068666450/

SUMMARY:All You Need Is Love - Romain Berger
DESCRIPTION:” From 28 July to 6 August\, the Retramp gallery is hosting the exhibition “All you need is love” by French artist photographer Romain Berger. \nOpening night on Friday 28 July from 6pm in the presence of the artist.\nThe Retramp gallery will be the third date of this tour which will have been previously presented in France and in England. \nALL YOU NEED IS LOVE is a message of tolerance and love in a society that is regressing day by day\, putting the lives of queer people more and more at risk.\nCome and celebrate with us the freedom to be who we want to be\, without judgement and without debate. \nABOUT THE ARTIST :\nROMAIN BERGER is a photographer of the French scene\, born at the end of the 80s in Normandy (Cherbourg).\nWith a background in film and theatre\, he has long been fascinated by images\, popular culture\, stereotypes and gender issues. \nHe produces artistic works that are offbeat\, cinematographic\, colourful and gently provocative. He unabashedly claims to be a camp artist\, a concept that designates\, among other things\, a form of self-mockery that allows gay men to laugh at the difficulties of their condition in a homophobic society\, all with artifice and exaggeration. \nThis is why he voluntarily takes clichés from gay culture and twists them in order to highlight our world\, both in its best and worst aspects (loneliness\, superficiality\, overconsumption\, violence\, addiction\, sex\, politics …) \nWe all have hidden vices\, and what interests him is not the public image\, but our secrets and what goes on in private. A way of criticising the hypocrisy of the human race and the political correctness imposed by a patriarchal society. Life has no rules\, we are the only masters of our game.\nInfluenced by photographer David Lachapelle’s staging and director Gregg Araki’s aestheticism for his colours\, his work is an ode to life\, love and freedom of expression. \nA subculture artist\, he is the photo equivalent of so-called independent cinema. He does not follow the current trends and mixes cinema and queer universe to the extreme\, far from the photographic fashion of the moment\, which seeks the maximum of naturalness. Little valued in his own country\, he finds his recognition abroad where he is often celebrated\, whether in magazines or exhibitions.\nThanks to this recognition abroad\, the English publisher Men on paper art published in September 2022\, LIFE’S A CABARET\, a book on his work\, gathering all his photographs since 2018. In this continuity\, Germany has published SEX UTOPIA\, a 400-page book\, presenting 70 artists from all over the world\, of which he is a part alongside the artists Pierre et Gilles. \nwww.romainberger-photography.com\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/722413485961402/

DESCRIPTION:Join Marc Vallée for the Berlin launch of 90s Archive: Volume One at the Retramp Gallery on Thursday 20 July 2023. Marc will be in conversation with Bad Gays co-author Ben Miller. The talk will be in English and a book signing will take place after.\nRegister: Eventbrite. \n“The pictures are autobiographical; a window into Vallée’s life in 90s London. However\, they have a wider historical and political significance\, capturing queer youth as the gay community slowly emerged from the horror of the 80s and early-90s global AIDS epidemic\, Margaret Thatcher and Clause 28\, which was in effect until 2003.”\n– British Journal of Photography\, December\, 2022. \n“As a teenager of the 80s with Thatcher\, AIDS and Clause 28 it’s not a surprise I ended up documenting my friends when I got to art school in the 90s…”\n– DAZED Magazine\, November\, 2022. \nBiographies\nMarc Vallée is a London-based documentary photographer.
