Since the release of 2022’s ‘Versions of Modern Performance\,’ “one of the most confident debuts of the year” (Vulture)\, much has changed for Horsegirl. In the fall of that year\, the three relocated to New York City\, where Penelope and Nora were to attend NYU— this was the first time the trio had written music outside of Penelope’s parents’ basement. The band’s new environment is reflected in the sonic fabric of the record. Through this time of unparalleled change\, the band turns inward. When Horsegirl returned to Chicago to record in January 2024\, they found a focus and intimacy in the studio that can only arise when it’s simply too cold to step outside. Le Bon led them into new\, bright\, clear\, sonic territories\, highlighting the inventive nature of these songs. New tools help bring this world to life; violins\, synths\, and gamelan tiles are all woven into the record. The 11 songs experiment with space and texture while maintaining a pop song at the core. All the while\, a confident simplicity brings the band’s songwriting ability to the forefront. Lead single “2468” is one of the shining examples of experimentation on ‘Phonetics On and On.’ Horsegirl explores Raincoats-like violin parts and kinetic percussion\, building stealthily towards a head-spinning motorik crescendo. Written almost entirely in the studio\, “2468” stands as an achieved byproduct of rewriting and rearranging\, adding and subtracting\, flash-moments of instability\, and embracing the unexpected result. The song’s video\, directed by writer and filmmaker Eliza Callahan and choreographed by Alexa West\, plays on a rhythmic series of quietly humorous\, hyper-specific instructional games. It’s hard to imagine any of these songs being written by anyone but Nora\, Penelope\, and Gigi. Horsegirl write with unanticipated honesty\, leading us through scenes of girlhood and youth. These are moments of their lives. The indelible truth is that Horsegirl is a band of best friends; being around them you can see that love in their eyes and it is always a joyous thing to witness. DESCRIPTION:Towards the end of 2021\, a small group of nearly 30 people in Berlin experienced something they had never experienced before: for around three hours\, they remained in a venue where the air pressure variations created by special compositions played through subwoofers immersed their bodies and hijacked their focus\, leading them into another state of mind.\nA few months later\, nearly 100 people in Lisbon went through the same process. Some cried in liberation\, one left in panic\, and a few fell asleep. Yet\, about 95% of them left the venue reporting what became the most recurring feedback:\n🗣 “I feel like my mind and my body are one.”\nThe music was created by both Deaf and hearing artists. The vibrations embraced them from head to toe\, and the sensation felt as if it was coming from inside—a familiar\, visceral\, yet entirely new mix of silence and music.\nThese were the first showcases of Sub_Bar music. Over the years\, rising Deaf talents trained with established artists at Sub_Bar Academy\, working exclusively with low frequencies. Some of them went on to perform at major music stages\, including ADE Festival in Amsterdam\, Silent Green in Berlin\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Serralves.\nThere are no recordings of these shows—because they are ephemeral. You cannot simply watch them or listen to them at home.\nNow\, The Sub_Bar Show #1\, premiering this April in nearly 30 cities worldwide\, marks the final step of this long journey—from 0 to 1\, establishing a new music style for the sense of touch and a ritual that brings together Deaf and hearing communities. My conclusion after ten songs and twenty minutes: it’s a hardcore volley ass kick par excellence. \nDark punk that somehow combines FLIEHENDE STÜRME with a good touch of Rachut vocals\, without it sounding like a typical Rachut band. Described by BBC3’s Late Junction as a « dark hymn for endangered seaweed species »\, the album is a reworking of Aubry’s 2022 experimental film Atlantic Ragagar\, which explores seaweed and pollution in Morocco. In live performances\, YRLNG improvises on modular synths using material from the album.\nGilles Aubry is a musician and sound artist based in Berlin. He creates experimental compositions using field recordings\, electronic manipulations\, and feedback processes. He is also known as a member of the Berlin-based noise collective MONNO. New Post-Punk and Coldwave danceable hybrid\, they founded JE T’AIME in 2018 and released a first eponymous album coming out from the misty and sinnest dark catacombs of Paris. The music of the trio\, signed to both Icy Cold Records and Manic Depression Records\, is reminiscent of the great era of the Mancunian Factory.\nFrom its first year\, the band took part in some major events such as W-Fest and Owls & Bats Festival\, while performing all over Europe. A live album called « Live At Gibus » recorded in Paris\, followed immediately as a marker of this spectacular start. \nIn 2021\, the band was silently focusing on more important work. They’d secluded themselves on the Brittany coast recording « PASSIVE/AGGRESSIVE »\, an ambitious double album. The first part ‘PASSIVE’ was unveiled on Valentine’s Day\, 14 February 2022. The second part\, ‘AGRESSIVE’\, will be released on November 1st\, the Day of the Dead. \nSince then\, the trio has been on the road again to defend this double album\, with notable appearances at European festivals such as the Castle Party Festival in Poland\, the NCN Festival in Germany\, and the Extramuralhas Festival in Portugal. \nPASSIVE STORY: Passive-aggressive behavior is a set of so-called passive attitudes that indirectly express a hidden hostility that is not openly assumed or remains unconscious to the subject.\nThe first eponymous album tells the story of a young man who has abandoned his wife in the middle of a party. We follow his adventures throughout this hellish night. \n“PASSIVE/AGRESSIVE\,” tells us the continuation of this story which it is mainly about the regrets and remorse of our hero. His wife has left him\, his daughter hates him\, and even his dog has run away. It’s the story of a magnificent loser constantly caught up in the past\, repeating the same mistakes over and over again\, hurting the people who love him and finding himself completely unable to evolve. \nThis double album “PASSIVE/AGRESSIVE”\, together with the eponymous first album\, form a triptych on the theme of the Peter Pan syndrome and the difficulty of growing up.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/2324015437976018/
