Event Details

We are looking forward to presenting Adam’s work in his upcoming solo exhibition “Gradually, then Suddenly,” on view from March 1-12 at SomoS.
Adam Lupton (b. 1987, Vancouver) is a Canadian, Brooklyn-based visual artist, currently working in Berlin. Known for his figurative paintings, sometimes accompanied by installations, Lupton’s work draws inspiration from his experience with OCD.
During his artist residency at SomoS, Canadian visual artist Adam Lupton has created a series of paintings dealing with the individual and societal ritual behavior characteristic of both OCD and the human need for certainty, working with stamp and transfer-based applications. Referencing how Covid-19 has aroused in everyone a new layer of hyper-awareness, Lupton’s aim for this new work is to resonate with the self-isolation, loneliness, and pandemic-related adjustments many have had to make over its course.
His artworks expand personal anxieties and the need for assurance to the societal level, with a particular interest in the religious and historical narratives that society relies on to satiate its desire for clarity. Through his questioning and depiction of such assurance-seeking rituals, Lupton aims to evoke a heightened awareness and contemplation of such behaviors in the viewer.
