SomoS Arts is excited to present “First Contentful Paint,” the first solo exhibition by American visual artist Leigh Cunningham in Europe, featuring oil paintings created during her artist residency at SomoS in fall 2021.
In her blurred paintings, the New Jersey-based painter depicts everyday scenes sourced mainly from online imagery. Skillfully rendered, her hazy depictions are united by their focus on intimacy and the psychology behind our relationship with online content.
Starting from a reflection on our shared digital experience and tapping onto our collective memory, Cunningham elucidates that the idea for this body of work began as “an interaction with digital media and ways that technology employs this tool, blurring, as a prerequisite to an image. I’m always drawn to images that seem banal, but that are sentimental, at the same time. Definitively figurative, as well as hinting at figurative. I like the idea of intimacy, because even in the paintings where I’m trying to be more abstract, there is a feeling of warmth that I’m trying to convey.”
In contrast to earlier blurred painting traditions that use 2D printed sources resulting in depictions that are very flat, Cunningham’s use of blurred, screen-based imagery aims to beyond the surface, suggesting shared experience. “I think the blur creates more depth, thinking about how we are not really separated from our environments or other people around us. We’re all sharing the same space.”
