SUMMARY:When pixels come to an end
DESCRIPTION:Since 2019\, Nico and the Navigators and Yui Kawaguchi have called into existence fragile yet timeless worlds of symbiosis between dance\, movement and digital projections. But soon\, on 01.01.2025\, these realities come to an abrupt end: the hardware used to enter them (Magicleap 1 glasses) falls silent as the security servers in the USA are switched off. What remains are traces that carry the work into the future\, a digital afterglow that is present but no longer visible.\nIn a two-week installation\, we bid farewell and invite reflection: How do we create digital archives that enable us to look to a future beyond ephemeral hardware? The space between man and machine becomes a mirror of our own transience. Join us in the swan song for something that has only just begun! \n🆓 Admission free\, no prior registration required\n📌 📌 Please note the opening times\n📆19.-22.12. 🕔14-18 Uhr\n📆27.-30.12. 🕔14-18 Uhr \nCredits:\nNico and the Navigators: AR_LOOPMACHINE\nArtistic Direction\, Choreography\, Animation: Yui Kawaguchi;\nDigital Development\, Concept\, Technology: Oliver Proske\nSoftware Development: Löhn Digital\nIn cooperation with: Internationales Theaterinstitut Deutschland // Mediathek für Tanz und Theater and Dachverband Tanz Deutschland\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1080090210424159/?event_time_id=1083477046752142

SUMMARY:REST
DESCRIPTION:REST\nNuria Fuster\, Tom Früchtl\, Peter Scior\nOpening: 2024\, November 29th\, 7 pm\nExhibition: 30.11.2024 – 11.01.2025 \nThe English word “rest” refers in German to what is left. In the exhibition “REST” the three artists use temporary situations in their special living spaces as an opportunity for their work. From the seemingly irrelevant\, overlooked aspects of their personal environment\, they each develop their own visual language in which the traces of change and transition are discussed.\nOn the one hand\, testamentary relics from other times are transferred to new contexts\, and on the other hand\, temporal processes themselves become the focus of attention.\nThe resulting „habitats“ are fragile intermediate stages whose vulnerability comes from a fluid reality and whose existence only represents a pause between the before and the after.\nNuria Fuster’s installations create fragile balances from found\, unmanipulated architectural relics through targeted interventions. Her photographs explore physical and chemical transformations through the confrontation of various elements.\nTom Früchtl’s pictures create traces of use and decay in complex compositions using the classic means of painting. His objects also simulate similar processes and thereby create a new artificial reality. \nPeter Scior’s images address tents as an archetype of human habitat and as a stage of transition. As a fragile and provisional architecture of a “second skin”\, they focus on the lighting situation\, which is the actual subject of his paintings. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/2060110077771032/?event_time_id=2060111577770882

SUMMARY:Closing Reception: Mary Katharine Tramontana SERIOUS PLEASURES
DESCRIPTION:Last chance to see SERIOUS PLEASURES! I am in awe of the wonderful reception — and amazing press — for my first solo show! Thank you so much! Come celebrate the closing with us!\nFinissage with reading\, cocktails\, + music📗\nWednesday\, 8 January 2025\, 7pm🍸\nJERGON\, Wrangelstr. 76\, 10997 Berlin📷\nOr by appointment.\nAs seen in:\n@artdailynews\n@fotografiska.berlin\n@eroticreview\n@tipberlin\n@siegessaeule_magazin\n@theberlinermag \n“In Mary Katharine Tramontana’s Serious Pleasures poetry is hyper-explicit—both sensual and intellectual—and in that sense closest to Pasolini’s destruction and reaffirmation of poetic sublimation. Her poetics of submission give the reader the option of experiencing subjecthood in either position.” Toni Hildebrant\, co-editor of PPPP: Pier Paolo Pasolini Philosopher\nAgainst the backdrop of a new era of sexual regression across the political spectrum\, Tramontana’s poetry and photography remind us that sex is a fundamental way of being human. Reclaiming her eroticism from her Catholic upbringing and global\, secular anti-female sexuality dogma\, her corporeal self-portraits and photography series of young bisexual men\, Boys (2023-ongoing)\, offer a queer perspective on art history’s legacy of the male artist desiring the female body. \n“The disciplining mechanisms of misogyny vary from country to country\, but one consistent tenet is that a woman’s value is determined by how hard it is to fuck her. I wanted to create a body of work purely for my gratification\,” Tramontana said. “As a poet\, I’m in a submissive position to my desire. As a photographer\, I intentionally objectify my male subjects in a power play that excites us both—they like that I am fully clothed while they’re in a state of undress—but I refer to them as my subjects. The process of our shared spontaneous attention in this moment of social media commodification—Simone Weil said\, ‘Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity’—is just as vital to me as the portrait.” \n“Serious Pleasures: Poems of Lust and Longing” is writer (New York Times\, Esquire) and artist Mary Katharine Tramontana’s debut collection of poetry\, accompanied by original photography. The collection began as a letter she wrote to seduce an incapacitating on-again off-again lover—a glamorous and mysterious Milanese neighbour. \nMary Katharine Tramontana (b. 1982\, US) is a Berlin-based artist\, poet\, and writer whose work on sexual politics and art has appeared in the New York Times\, Esquire\, Playboy\, the Guardian\, the Atlantic\, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. She’s collaborated with Reina Sofía\, the Spanish Film Archive\, WILZIG Museum\, Arsenal Institute\, and Academy of Arts Berlin\, among others. In the past year\, she’s exhibited photography in five shows in Miami\, Berlin\, and Savannah\, and given several talks on sexuality and culture. The recipient of a Frieze bursary\, she’s also worked as a sex research assistant at Kinsey Institute. This spring she’ll be in residence at Villa Lena to write her first non-fiction book co-written with Erika Lust and published in English\, French\, Italian\, Catalan\, Spanish\, and German.\nFree entry.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1129749995212501/

SUMMARY:Opening of The Western Horizon by Steinunn Gunnlaugsdóttir
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Gudmundsdottir is proud to present The Western Horizon\, the first solo exhibition by Steinunn Gunnlaugsdóttir at the gallery\, opening on January 17\, 2025. This exhibition brings together a collection of recent and new works that Gunnlaugsdóttir describes as a “still life of Western culture\,” offering an exploration of contemporary cultural narratives and the tensions that define them. \nThe exhibition features three large-scale works that are both interconnected and distinct\, each challenging perceptions of cultural symbols and their associated meanings. Using a minimalist palette of primary colors—yellow\, red\, and blue—accented with black and white\, Steinunn creates a visual clarity that amplifies the conceptual depth of her pieces. Her works invite reflection and dialogue\, dissecting the layers of Western identity and its historically complicated relationship with the rest of the globe. \nBorn in Iceland in 1983\, Steinunn Gunnlaugsdóttir is a visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses sculpture\, video\, sound\, and installation. After earning her BFA from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2008\, she participated in the prestigious HWP Art Program at Ashkal Alwan in Beirut\, Lebanon (2013–2014). She was nominated as Iceland’s “Artist of the Year” in 2018 and received the Richard Serra Fund Award in 2021 for her groundbreaking contributions to sculpture.\nAt the core of Steinunn’s work lies an exploration of the human existential struggle—how individuals confront\, resist\, or surrender to the material and intangible structures shaping their existence. Her practice examines the tension between autonomy and control\, offering a poignant commentary on the human condition within societal frameworks.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1549401772426779/

SUMMARY:COMPLETE BASIC DECOR
DESCRIPTION:The artists Jan Brokof and Verena Issel invite you to their joint exhibition COMPLETE BASIC DECOR – a large joint spatial installation that focuses on dialogue and artistic overlaps. \nThe starting point of the installation are jointly selected works by the two artists\, in which their artistic positions touch and overlap. These works enter into a visual dialogue with a specially developed wall installation made of clay paper and woodcut. In a creative ping-pong game between the selected works and the expansive installation\, a complete work is created that dissolves the boundaries between individual work and spatial staging. \nThe exhibition shows a diverse interplay of materials\, techniques and perspectives and invites visitors to discover connections and contrasts.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1333991457966830/
