DESCRIPTION:Gallery Gudmundsdottir is proud to present The Western Horizon\, the first solo exhibition by Steinunn Gunnlaugsdóttir at the gallery\, opening on January 17\, 2025. This exhibition brings together a collection of recent and new works that Gunnlaugsdóttir describes as a “still life of Western culture\,” offering an exploration of contemporary cultural narratives and the tensions that define them. \nThe exhibition features three large-scale works that are both interconnected and distinct\, each challenging perceptions of cultural symbols and their associated meanings. Using a minimalist palette of primary colors—yellow\, red\, and blue—accented with black and white\, Steinunn creates a visual clarity that amplifies the conceptual depth of her pieces. Her works invite reflection and dialogue\, dissecting the layers of Western identity and its historically complicated relationship with the rest of the globe. \nBorn in Iceland in 1983\, Steinunn Gunnlaugsdóttir is a visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses sculpture\, video\, sound\, and installation. After earning her BFA from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2008\, she participated in the prestigious HWP Art Program at Ashkal Alwan in Beirut\, Lebanon (2013–2014). She was nominated as Iceland’s “Artist of the Year” in 2018 and received the Richard Serra Fund Award in 2021 for her groundbreaking contributions to sculpture.\nAt the core of Steinunn’s work lies an exploration of the human existential struggle—how individuals confront\, resist\, or surrender to the material and intangible structures shaping their existence. DESCRIPTION:In the Rangfoyer of the Deutsche Oper Berlin.\nAdmission is free. \nEd Atkins is attracted to the costumes from the Deutsche Oper Berlin’s collection in a special way: the masses of different fabrics in their dense array on sober clothes rails are like a compressed storehouse of stories and memories. Each individual item of clothing would tell its own story if it were taken down from the rack: about the opera in which it was used\, about the people who wore it and about the dreams that it triggers in everyone who looks at it. For him\, this analogue part of his installation forms the counterpart to his video installations\, which stage fragments of stories from today’s flood of digital media images\, some bizarre\, some disturbing. This tension between costumes\, opera stories and current films forms the narrative core of Ed Atkins‘ work as a visual and narrative artist – he is also a contributor to the libretto of Rebecca Saunders’ world premiere of LASH on 20 June 2025 on the stage of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. \nEd Atkins is one of the most versatile British artists of his generation and has attracted international attention as a visual artist\, author and filmmaker.
