Smif -N-Wessun’s career is as exciting as a roller coaster ride: up and down again and again. The two guys from Brooklyn now bring us old-school rap, rap from the times of the 90s, when there was still a lot of conflict in the Eastcoast – Westcoast conflict, when the Wu-Tang Clan, Notorious B.I.G. and many more sent a new way of life, a kind of lifestyle in the form of rap to our brains and formed the nutrient for the formation of new synapses. Smif-N-Wessun was in the middle of the action at the time and successfully released her debut on Duck Down in 1995, with more to come.

The year is 1995. New York is on fire. The Wu-Tang clan has just opened its “36 Chambers,” and Notorious B.I.G. is ushering in a new era in the rap genre with its debut”. Many rap fans will forever remember this time as the best ever. In this groundbreaking time for the future hip hop, however, a debut album that fits perfectly into these days goes under: Smif’N’Wessun’s “Dah Shinin'”.

In 1993, the two rappers Tek and Steele met. Both are from Brooklyn. Both have shaped the road. Just like the other guys around them: Ruck aka Sean Price and Rock, later known as Heltah Skeltah, rapper Buckshot, who at 5ft and Evil Dee (Da Beatminerz) form the trio Black Moon, as well as Starang Wondah, Top Dog and Louieville Sluggah (collectively working as Originoo Gunn Clappaz). Together they form the Brooklyn collective Boot Camp Clik, which acts as an artistic collection pool of the label Duck Down and makes its acclaimed debut in the scene with “For The People” in 1997. Years later, Tek & Steele also appeared on the Boot Camp Clik albums “The Chosen Few”, as well as “The Last Stand”. The Brooklyn home, better known as Bucktown in Boot Camp Clik jargon, gives the rappers’ raw identity and cuts a somber, bass-heavy sound to the posse.

Tek & Steele made their first appearance in 1993 on the first release of the Bucktown clique Black Moon’s “Enta Da Stage”. In 1994 the single “Bucktown b/w Let’s Git It On” followed and finally the debut “Dah Shinin'” a year later. In 2004, the loyal fans enjoy the Best Of collection “Still Shinin'”, which features old pieces, remixes and exclusive freestyles from the boys. The following year, Smif’N’Wessun benefited from their label Duck Down’s Triple Threat campaign and launched the third installment of the series after Sean Prize’s “Monkey Barz” and Buckshot & 9th Wonder’s “Chemistry.” Qualitatively, they can’t quite keep up with the other Duck Down releases, but they indulge in the spirit of the Nineties despite the
“Reloaded” to the highest degree.
