Between November 30th and December 4th2021, 2-7 pm, SomoS presents Sun Rises, featuring paintings created by Chinese visual artist Huiquan Jiang during her artist residency, as well as a joint performance Hearing the Sunrise, together with sound designer Qianxun Chen.
Incorporating spiritual and shamanistic practices in her work, the multidisciplinary artist works across mediums, including painting, performance, video, and site-specific installation.
In this exhibition focusing on abstract painting and performance, Huiquan Jiang bases her work squarely on her personal spirituality, in which she looks for the relationship between the human and the divine, while seeking to connect to her inner self through the practice of Tai chi, yoga, meditation, and chanting.
While the presented paintings, each containing the geographical coordinates of visited temples in Germany and Italy, are a spontaneous expression for the artist, the performance and her shamanic presence demonstrate the journey of self-searching and reconnection. Through her work, Huiquan Jiang invites the visitors to appreciate “a piece of joy within the greyness of Berlin.”
During the Hearing the Sunrise performance, Chinese sound designer Qianxun Chen will provide an ambient listening experience of plants by using devices that translates biodata from plants into audio. By employing multiple devices, Chen focuses her sound on the differences between rhythmic cycles produced by the plants to stimulate the audience’s sensitivity, decentering human perspectives while lowering the barriers of the human ego.
The work presentation Sun Rises is on view from November 30 to December 4, 2021, 2 – 7 pm, while the performance “Hearing the Sunrise” will take place on Tuesday, November 30, at 6.30 pm. Since the performance is an RSVP-only event, visitors are kindly asked to send an e-mail to email@example.com in advance. Entry is, as always, free.
