With the solo exhibition Meme Paintings, SomoS presents Jiyeon Kim’s new group of paintings, conceived in Berlin early 2020 during her Berlin artist residency, offering a comprehensive look at the unique creative vision of this prolific young South-Korean artist that consistently bridges real and online life in exciting ways.
In her work, Jiyeon Kim consistently explores ways of representing the individual in our digital era. Most of her work uses acrylic paint, and combines elements of abstraction with figuration. Deeply invested in reinterpreting the art of portraiture in a contemporary way, she focuses on the ways in which our attitudes toward depictions of the human face and figure have changed with the rise of the internet and digital technology.
Her latest workgroup, the Meme Paintings, comprises 11 paintings, ranging from 20 x 30cm in size to 165 x 125 cm, all using mixed media on canvas. In the series, started in 2020, Jiyeon Kim’s work evolves from “selfie” to “story,” from private to public figures, from using candid imagery to overly familiar ones, as she moves beyond her earlier relatively straight frontal portraiture to visualize new and more complex ideas about the ways in which we interact with the internet, and the fleeting narratives it creates within our own minds.
We are taking precautions to ensure the safety of our patrons and staff, and ask that all visitors to the gallery wear face masks or scarf and maintain the recommended distance of 2m. In this gradual reopening period, visitors are advised to schedule a private visit through the form at the end of this page; or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.

We play jazz standards, use the app iReal Pro or sheet music and whatever you need to play. It doesn’t have to be pefect. Just have fun! There is no band, it’s just you, but there are always enough people to play with. Meet your new musical friends!
+++ corona virus precautions +++
Please maintain 1,5 m distance to everybody playing and listening at all times. Be respectful with other people’s needs for distancing.
We usually have 1 or 2 small amps, a minimal drum kit and sometimes a piano/keyboard.
+++ If you want to play
Bring your own instrument + cable. If you have one, bring your portable amp. There is no power source in the park, so everything has to be battery operated. Any type of percussion is also very welcome.
+++ If you want to sing
Bring your own microphone + cable.

THE KLUNKERKRANICH CULTURAL ROOF GARDEN above Neukölln Arcaden
The Klunkerkranich is a cultural roof garden that, in addition to spacious and green outdoor areas and the most panoramic view of Berlin indoor, now offers concerts, a DJ program, readings, cinema, culinary delights and more over two floors.
The greenery sprouts in the garden, flocks of birds hover over the roof in a formation flight and inside there is a first-class cultural program. The Klunkerkranich, located in the pulsating heart of North Neukölln, is an integral part of the neighborhood. Since 2013, the Klunkerkranich has been attracting old Kiez rocks, new Berliners and visitors from all over the world to the top parking level of the Neukölln Arkaden. In addition to the spacious and green outdoor areas, cozy huts with a diverse cultural program attract visitors: from readings to poetry slams, from concerts to DJ sets, from cinema to markets. With the opening of the second hut “Behind the Alps” in October 2017, the Klunkerkranich creates space for new formats and rentals and is increasingly developing into a cultural village on the roof. Sequel follows!
